What are the Positions?

Commanders

Companies in the Commanders category are the perfect blend of today and tomorrow. They are leading the industry. They have one eye on answering today‘s security needs, with the other on introducing new use cases such as wellness and convenience.

Futurists

Companies in the Futurists category are forward-looking, and their technologies reflect this mindset. Although they appreciate the history and legacy of the industry, they work overtime to avoid using terminology associated with the Access Control industry because their attention is entirely forward.

Traditionalists

Companies in the Traditionalist category focus on legacy technologies and have an adverse reaction to prioritizing new ideas or concepts. They may have been in a groove, but they‘re stuck in it. They have been selling the same way for years and lack creativity in reaching new markets.

Settlers

Companies in the Settler category have historically focused on legacy technologies but have started to adopt the technologies forward looking customers want and expect. They take a horizontal approach to high security and struggle to go down-market.

What is the Criteria?
Market Reach
Market Reach is the potential total addressable market. It is the company’s ability to go into new markets beyond where it is today.
Technology
Technology is the underpinnings of an organization’s product(s). It is the technology that is sold, whether it be a product, part, or software.
Innovation Engine
The Innovation Engine is the part of the organization where new things - ideas, products, business, services, etc. - are originating.
Marketing
Marketing at its core is the way an organization brings a product to market. It is the way of communicating which includes the content that is created, social media, storytelling, the use of different platforms and graphics.
Talent
Talent is all about the people. The focus is getting the right people for the areas that are critical to an organization’s success. Talent is not tenure, but instead the ability to attract the right talent and uplevel existing employees as necessary.
It Factor
“It factor” is the emotion we feel when we’re drawn towards someone or something - it’s an exciting and curious feeling. It’s not a marketing technique, or a buzzword, but a valid aspect of the success of a business, their products, and customers’ attraction to them. ‘It factor’ is about a feeling of swag, either you have it, or people perceive that you have it.

How we did it

This yearly report is a quantitative and qualitative report of 40 leading physical access control manufacturers. We at GROUP 337 used a 70 point system of publicly available information and industry expert assessments. Each company was given the opportunity to provide information and customer assessments. In the end we weighed the data points and plotted them based on technology, market reach, talent, innovation engines, marketing and overall. IT Factor was used as a criteria in the overall assessment but was not plotted separately. Our goal is to provide a report that can help end users, investors, contractors, and the manufacturers themselves make an assessment and answer the question: “Is my access control system set up for today or tomorrow?” We think we have done that.
